Transporting live chickens involves a great deal of expertise. The whole process does of course require a high level of care and accuracy. To some extent, newly-hatched chicks can be compared to newborn babies. Like a baby, a chick is unable to adjust its body heat to the environment after it has just hatched, in other words, they are heterothermic. That means that they lose more heat than they can produce, i.e. their body temperature will drop quickly without being able to compensate. As from the very first day, chicks therefore need to be maintained at a temperature of 40.5 to 41 °C.
Consequently, when transporting newly-hatched chicks, it is of vital importance that the body temperature of the chicks is kept at the required level and that they receive sufficient oxygen. During the past years, Van Eck has developed and built various vehicles that can be used specifically for the transport of newly-hatched chicks. Thanks to the application of advanced technology, the number of chicks lost during transport between the hatchery and poultry-keeper is kept to a minimum.
In-house refrigerating technology
Van Eck has a complete package of in-house disciplines. Van Eck is unique in the market, as it is the only Dutch company in the sector that manufactures its own chassis and bodyworks and customises and installs refrigerating systems. Transfrigo refrigerating engineers was formed in 1966 and as such can rely on more than 43 years of experience in the field of transport cooling systems, particularly in the field of transporting newly-hatched, live chicks. This means that all components of the vehicle are fully synchronised and that the chicks are transported under the best possible conditions, reducing casualties to a minimum.
Automatic ventilation system
The vehicle is fitted with a special chick conditioning system. The system is based on a Carrier Transicold type Vector 1850 cooling unit. The Vector is a cooling system with excellent cooling and heating properties. In order to transport the newly-hatched chicks in good health in changing weather conditions, a High Load Capacity unit has been installed. In the event of a maximum load, this unit provides additional cooling and ventilation capacity. This cooling unit also serves as emergency power source for the entire ventilation capacity of the main unit. The evaporator is integrated in the ceiling, reducing the loss of height and thus maintaining maximum loading height.
The ceiling is fitted with a special air distribution system, ensuring that the air is evenly distributed in the cargo hold. The ceiling system can be opened up entirely, facilitating access for repairs, maintenance and cleaning. Excess air pressure and carbon dioxide are discharged via special ducts in the loading deck. If the vehicle is not used for chicks but for goods, the ducts can be closed with special covers. Digitally controlled grids have been fitted on either side of the bodywork, regulating the correct air ventilation settings.
Excellent monitoring system
Both a filter and inspection door is present on either side of the bodywork, making it possible to check the condition of the newly-hatched chicks in transit.
A strong aluminium door has been installed on the inside of the bodywork that protects the entire system, the filter section, the evaporator and the ventilation grids. This also makes the whole system easy to maintain, repair and clean.
A special monitoring and operating panel has been fitted within the truck, feeding the driver with information on the performance of the ventilation system. Air ventilation settings can be adjusted digitally from this panel. In addition, the driver is equipped with a mobile and digital alarm unit with remote control that protects the system and that sends out a distress signal to the driver in the event of an emergency.
Maximum climate control
In order to achieve maximum climate control inside the bodywork, it is important that the insulation value of the bodywork is high and continues to be so during its service life. Van Eck has been known to produce high-quality bodyworks with high insulation values for more than 47 years. Contrary to alternative bodywork manufacturers, our walls are not glued together, but produced under high pressure by means of the so-called wet-on-wet method. The walls have been insulated with polyurethane and pure polyester resin, united through glass fibre and roving (the so-called wet-on-wet method). This wet-on-wet method guarantees an extremely high insulation value. The high insulation value keeps the temperature in the trailer stable and thus the condition of the live chicks remains of a high quality. The system can easily deal with severe winters or tropical summers.
Proper hygienic conditions
The baffle plates in the bodywork are integrated in the floor and pressed into the sidewalls. The baffle plates are thus not glued and fastening materials such as pop rivets are not used. As a result, accumulation of bacteria behind the baffle plate is not possible and thus the chicks can be transported under the correct hygienic conditions. The design of this special vehicle also allows for easy and proper cleaning and disinfection of the entire interior, enabling the carrier to meet the HACCP standards without any problems.
